How to Move: Your Moving House Checklist

Moving house can be a tough & stressful time even if you’re on top of it all. Added to that your heart is pulled between the sadness involved in leaving behind your old home and the excitement of moving into a new one. To take the stress out of the whole situation, we bring you a few tips for organizing your move.

Make a Moving House Checklist

Your moving out checklist must cover everything from taking care of change of address to getting in touch with a moving company. It is worth making this list in plenty of time before the move and prioritising the tasks so that nothing gets left to the last minute unless its unavoidable.

If you’ve planned on having no help with packing, ensure that you have sufficient boxes and packing tape for all of your belongings. Ideally this would include both large plastic moving boxes as well as cardboard boxes. Something that can save a lot of time at the other end is making sure all your boxes are clearly labelled with their contents.

Then comes the change of address. Make a list of all the service providers that you need to inform of your move. These will include your TV, phone & internet company and electricity provider. It is worth contacting these companies at least 30 days before you move to make sure you have given sufficient notice to end or move your service.

However you also don't want to forget important services such as doctors & dentists. You may even want to collect medical records if you’re moving interstate. Finally, make sure you give your new address to family and friends. But don't worry because Australia Post provide a mail redirection service which will come in handy if you have missed anybody!

Moving house is a good chance to have a big clear out and get rid of all those things you don't really need or use. It may even be worth having a garage or yard sale to help get rid of these items and earn a bit of money.
